We Are Pirates is a 2015 American novel written by Daniel Handler.[1][2][3]

Plot

The plot revolves around Gwen Needle, a fourteen-year-old girl who lives in San Francisco Bay. Feeling dissatisfied with her mundane life, Gwen becomes fixated on the idea of becoming a 21st-century pirate and embarking on thrilling adventures. She gathers a group of friends, including Max and Danny, and together they form a pirate.

Driven by their newfound desire for adventure, the young pirates hatch a plan to steal a boat and set sail on the open sea. As they navigate the challenges of their pirate pursuits, they encounter obstacles, both external and internal. Their actions have consequences that ripple through their lives and those of the people around them.

Parallel to Gwen's story, the novel also focuses on her father, Phil Needle, who works as an audio producer. Phil is going through his own midlife crisis and struggles to understand his daughter's rebellious actions. He yearns for a sense of excitement and reinvention in his own life.

As the narrative unfolds, the lives of Gwen, Phil, and their acquaintances intertwine in unexpected ways. The story delves into themes of youthful rebellion, the complexities of family dynamics, and the pursuit of freedom and adventure.
