Gallus gallus, Gallus cinsine bağlı bir hayvan türüdür.^[2]

Genetilk kanıtlar evcil tavuğun kırmızı hint kuşu ve gri hint kuşunun geçmiş melezleşmesinden oluştuğu fikrini oldukça güçlü bir şekilde öne sürmektedir.^[3] Kırmızı hint kuşu ilk kez en az beş bin yıl önce Asya' da evcilleşmiştir. Ardından da bütün dünyaya yayılmıştır ve evcil formu küresel olarak çokça üretilebilir hem et hem yumurta kaynağı olarak tutuldu.
